Sharpie’s Golf House was a golf shop on Elizabeth Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills, near Central railway station. For decades it featured this animated, electric neon sign above the shopfront that had become a Sydney landmark. Since the 1950s, train commuters out of the city at night had marvelled at the golfer sinking the golf balls in the hole. The shop closed a few years ago but the Sharpie’s Golf House Sign was heritage listed for its value as a unique example of 20th century advertising. The sign is currently in storage with the intention to reincorporate the reconstructed sign on the building after it has been redeveloped.
“Amicus Certus” is a sculpture created by Tom Bass in 1960 which is located on the side of the AMP building on Alfred Street. The full motto of the Australian Mutual Provident Society is “amicus certus in re incerta” which means “a sure friend in an uncertain event”. This perspective gives a view of the entrance and also a sense of the curve of the building’s facade.
This green sculpture is located in the middle of a large roundabout at the intersection of Arncliffe Street and Brodie Sparks Drive, in the southern suburb of Wolli Creek. “Wolli Dancing” was created by Australian sculptor Blaze Krstanoski-Blazeski and unveiled in this newly redeveloped area in 2008. The plaque reads: Wolli Dancing relates to the Wolli tradition; a place that represents openness, which expresses joy, such as dancing. It captures the sensation and enthusiasm of the performers.
Sydney City Council has been renovating Prince Alfred Park in the southern city edge suburb of Surry Hills. It has included demolition of the old public swimming pool and construction of a brand new facility. It’s due to open later this year, and I can’t wait!
